Perfect For
Hidcote is one of the best choices for gardeners seeking a dependable, cold-hardy English lavender with outstanding fragrance. It performs beautifully in herb gardens, cottage gardens, formal borders, rock gardens, and containers.
Its sweet fragrance and low camphor content make it an excellent variety for cooking, baking, herbal teas, lavender sugar, cookies, syrups, and other culinary creations.
How to Plant Hidcote Lavender
Plant in a location receiving at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.
Excellent drainage is the key to long-term success. Lavender prefers sandy or gravelly soil and does not tolerate standing water during winter.
Plant the crown at or slightly above soil level. Raised beds or planting mounds can significantly improve drainage and winter survival.
Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to provide good airflow and allow each plant to mature into a full, rounded shrub.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season while roots establish. Once established, Hidcote becomes drought tolerant and should be watered deeply but infrequently.
Pruning
Prune lightly after flowering or in early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Remove spent flower stems and shape the plant without cutting deeply into old woody stems.
Regular annual pruning keeps plants dense, productive, and attractive for many years.
Harvesting
Harvest flower stems when the first blossoms begin opening for the strongest fragrance and best drying quality.
Hidcote is an excellent choice for:
- Fresh bouquets
- Dried bouquets
- Sachets
- Potpourri
- Soap making
- Essential oil projects
- Culinary use
Growing Hidcote in Michigan
Hidcote is widely recognized as one of the most winter-hardy English lavender varieties. In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, success still depends on planting in full sun with exceptional drainage, especially during winter. Raised planting areas, gravelly soil, and avoiding winter moisture greatly improve survival.
Because of its cold tolerance and dependable performance, Hidcote is one of the English lavender varieties we most recommend for northern gardeners.
