Goldenrod - Late-Season Pollinator Plant

Goldenrod is an important plant for the pollinators late in the growing season.

By the end of August in the U.P., Rudebeckia is still in its glory and some lavenders are showing signs of a second bloom. Alliums still have flowers, but not many. That's when Goldenrod takes center stage. Masses of golden-yellow flowers create a gorgeous contrast among the green ferns and trees. They become busy feeding stations for bees, butterflies and other insects during late summer and fall.

A video shows how easy it is for bees to access pollen from Goldenrod. One of our product images is of a female bumblebee with full pockets of pollen at her side. Bees need those pollen stores to help the young survive winter.  

You will receive one rooted Goldenrod starter plant for your pollinator, cottage or woodland garden.

We are listing this as a general Goldenrod - Solidago but our fields have 3 different varieties. If you need a specific type please contact us.

 Why Late Flowers Matter

• A pollinator garden is more useful when everything does not flower at the same time.
• Lavender, catmint, allium, oregano and many summer perennials provide food earlier in the season. Goldenrod helps extend that flowering window into late summer and fall.
• That makes it particularly valuable when building a garden intended to provide something in bloom across a longer portion of the growing season.

 What You Receive

Shipped orders: One healthy rooted starter plant, shipped bare-root.

Local delivery: One rooted starter planted in a nursery pot and ready for planting.

The starter you receive will be considerably smaller than a mature flowering plant and will develop additional stems as it becomes established.

 Growing Conditions

Light: Full sun is generally best

Soil: Adaptable to a range of garden soils; good drainage is beneficial

Water: Water regularly while establishing. Water requirements after establishment depend somewhat on species and site conditions.

Growth habit: Upright flowering perennial

Bloom: Late summer into fall

Flower color: Golden yellow

Pollinators: Especially valuable to bees, butterflies and other late-season pollinating insects

Garden position: Middle to back of pollinator, perennial or naturalized plantings

Mature Size and Spreading: Different Goldenrod species can behave very differently.

If you prefer a tightly controlled formal garden, Goldenrod may require occasional management depending on the species and growing conditions.

Leave Some Stems Standing

After flowering, consider leaving some dried stems and seed heads in place through winter.

They can:

•  add winter structure
•  provide shelter for insects
•  provide seeds for wildlife
•  reduce unnecessary fall garden disturbance

Stems can be cut back when new spring growth begins.

 In a Pollinator Garden

Goldenrod is particularly useful toward the back or middle of a mixed planting, where its later yellow flowers can rise behind shorter plants.

It pairs especially well with:

• Lavender
• Catmint
• Purple allium
• Black-Eyed Susan
• Bee balm
• Yarrow
• Asters
  

The yellow flowers create especially strong contrast with the purple and blue flowers found throughout much of our lavender and pollinator collection.

But it is most striking among green conifers or grown in mass surrounded by green lawn. So if you don't have much space, but you have a strip that can be planted, this could be gorgeous.

Goldenrod is part of our effort to build a plant collection that supports pollinators across more of the growing season rather than concentrating everything into a short summer bloom period.

We especially value it because it comes into its own when the garden is beginning to transition toward fall. And when you see how pollinators love it, you'll want to make more accessible to them.
